February 27 Visit to Cardiff and Signs of Spring February 27, 2012

We had a  glimpse of spring at the weekend…the sun shone, some flowers appeared  and the frogs started croaking!

Bute Park Cardiff

We caught the 7.56 train from Llangadog to Cardiff. It’s a super journey especially on a sunny morning when there are no leaves on the tree to spoil the views. There were lambs in the fields, sunlight on the estuaries, magnificent monster installations at the steel works and miles and miles of zipping countryside in blurred colours to glimpse before disappearing into rays of light in the train windows.
We walked around the outside of  the marvellous Millennium Stadium with fingers crossed that the rugby match in the afternoon in Twickenham would end with a Welsh win!

Our wish for a Welsh win was granted! Hooray!

A visit to the National Museum was next on our list to see the Scott of the Antarctic Exhibition and the exhibition to mark the Queen’s Jubilee. Both were brilliant.

Our grandson loved the woolly mammoths too!

Back home the frogs had been working hard and the pond was filled with their spawn.

Three Canada Geese on island - one will have to leave!

Weather warming up today but rainy again but the signs of Spring are definitely there and the frogs are still croaking!

February 21 Hay on Wye visit February 21, 2012

Filed under: Uncategorized — lletty @ 10:24 am

Off we go again…..had a great drive over to Hay on Wye  to take our old wood burning stove to F J Williams the Timber and Builders Merchants (they have a huge selection of  woodburning stoves etc to choose from www.fjwilliams.co.uk) ) where the week before we had bought our new stove. They had kindly agreed to do a deal with us on our old stove!

The new stove a Charnwood CFour Woodburner looks brilliant in the cottage and is so easy to light and warm the place up…. can’t wait for the first visitors to use it!

Jim watching our old woodburner being forklifted into the Merchants workshop

Hay on Wye castle set in the middle of the town next to all the amazing bookshops

We enjoyed a long leisurely stroll around the town popping in and out of all the book shops, antique centres, clothes shops and stopping off at last to have a tasty lunch in a handy bistro, before we ended the day  looking through all the art shops and galleries.

All this just an hour away from home!

What a wonderful way to spend a day….watching and admiring David Cowdry as he paints one of his masterpieces….actually we were all very lucky today as he decided to paint two!

Wendy Powell Jones…artist and tutor  had organised the day  with  David so all  her students could attend and  enjoy learning from David.

David starting his painting of a snowy river scene

Using two hands to paint in the background detail of the trees

Adding tree reflections into the area of the painting which will be the river

David left this painting unfinished

Further tree detail being added to David's second painting of a snowy woodland scene

David's painting session ends with the woodland scene developing well. David said that many more hours will be needed in his studio to complete the painting to his satisfaction.

A fantastic day out- thank you David and Wendy.

David’s next exhibition will be at ABERGLASNEY Gardens
