When we retired to this area nearly ten years ago we didn’t know anything about the rural life that goes in local communities. It is truly amazing! Nearly every village however small seems to hold their own Show Day thorough the months of July and August. Today it was our local village, Llansadwrn, that put on a truly wonderful show. A marquee is erected, sheep pens are unstacked and clanked together, a circular show area is created for all the horse and pony events , parking arranged, large and small tents placed around the edge of the show ring for stall holders and Bob’s your uncle- one has a showground ready for neighbours, friends, farmers, vets, visitors et al to attend.
A huge amount of work behind the scene makes the whole event run happily and smoothly throughout the day. The Show opens early in the morning and all sorts of horse boxes and trailers trundle through the field carrying their animals for show. There are categories for: Speckled Face Sheep, Butcher’s Lambs(!), Suffolks, Welsh Mountain and Brecknock Hill Cheviots, Black Sheep, and Badger,. Youngsters are greatly encouraged to follow farming traditions so there are categories for Young Handlers too.
The Dog Show is well supported with Happiest Dog, Exhibit that most resembles its owner and Best Fancy Dressed Dog being some of the categories one can enter with your pooch!
In the Marquee there are tables laden with a huge variety of vegetables, all shapes , sizes and colours as competitors showed off the produce that they have been growing thorough the year. Onions, carrots, beetroot, leeks, parsnips, potatoes beans, cabbage and more all arranged beautifully side by side waiting for the Judges to assess them all. Outside the tent nails are bitten to the quick by the growers as judging takes place and the certificates are placed next to the winning entries…only then are people allowed back into the marquee to see if they approve of the judges’ decisions!
All the Sections the Flowers, Domestic Produce( delicious looking goodies, cakes quiches, bread, eggs, jams, etc) Handicrafts, Country Crafts, Photographs, Art and Children’s Section are similarly run but it is the range and quality of the items on display that is truly remarkable. So many gifted and talented folk share their love of the countryside by entering these shows – they all deserve a Highly Commended and Gold certificate!
I brought home a few certificates myself…so all in all…another brilliant happy day in Llansadwrn.
