Don Wales with Blue Bird
We have had an amazing day at Pendine which is less than an hour’s drive from Lletty Cottage. We arrived early as Jim was worried about getting a parking space on such a unique day ! Actually we needn’t have worried because as soon as the tide went out they let everyone park on the sand! We had an early lunch at The Coffee Shop– a most delicious fresh salad and Ploughman’s lunch…highly recommend a visit when in Pendine.
As 2015 celebrates the 90th anniversary of Sir Malcolm Campbell achieving a new World Land Speed record of 150mph at Pendine in his 350hp Sunbeam, it had been arranged to recreate the run with a low speed drive by of the Sunbeam- (renamed Blue Bird by Campbell.) The driver on this occasion would be Sir Malcolm’s grandson , Don Wales. Vast numbers of folk arrived to witness this remarkable event and a number brought their own special cars too.
Pendine has always had a special place in my heart as all my childhood family holidays were spent in a caravan at Pendine. My mum had also spent her younger days holidaying there and she told us about racing her sand yacht along the sand. Her brothers were also spectators at various land speed record occasions. My brothers used to dig out tunnels in the dunes and hide in them- how we didn’t all get suffocated or drown I’ll never know! Such brilliant memories of a lovely time and place and now today I’ve another great memory to add to the list!
